Good morning, Grand Junction. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 8th of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HomewardBound reached a $60,000 fundraising goal and will keep its North Avenue shelter open seven days a week until Feb. 27 to help clients through the coldest month — after which, services will transition to the Pathways Family Shelter as additional funds support expansion.  KKCO 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central High School, Colorado Mesa University and the University of Colorado Boulder Engineering Program signed a partnership on Jan. 7 to set up a direct STEM pathway on the Western Slope. The deal guarantees qualifying students admission and scholarship opportunities through mentorship and hands-on learning.  KKCO 11
  • District 51 has launched ParentSquare to centralize messaging between its 40+ schools and families. Officials encourage parents to download the app via the App Store or Google Play to keep up with important updates.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents can drop off their Christmas trees at Mesa County Compost Facility for free disposal, where the trees are turned into nutrient-rich compost for local gardens, trees and grass; officials urge early drop-offs to avoid fire hazards — facility hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.  KJCT
  • A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 5 a.m. Friday above 8,000 ft as heavy snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph make mountain travel hazardous today — valleys may see rain and lighter snow.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Mesa County Public Health released a restaurant inspection blotter for local eateries along Mack to De Beque that summarizes routine and complaint-based inspections from last week. Several restaurants require re-inspections while others passed after additional checks (violations ranged from food handling issues to missing safety certifications).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Good Samaritan Clinic will host a free flu vaccine clinic for the uninsured in partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at its parking lot at 402 Grand Ave — walk-ins are welcome although appointments are encouraged to manage vaccine supply.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • David Ling (a doctor at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital) advises residents to stay home when sick, cover their mouths and wash their hands, and to get the flu vaccine from local clinics while extra care is recommended for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.  KKCO 11

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Roice-Hurst Humane Society named 7-year-old Nula the pet of the week; the calm kitty is known for curling in a sunny window seat and slowly adapting to new homes. The shelter welcomes local inquiries for adoption.  KJCT
