COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross of Western Colorado is inviting locals to volunteer as the new year begins. Executive Director Christie Caster said volunteers—making up 90% of the workforce—serve in a variety of roles, including helping families affected by house fires.  KKCO 11
  • Two senior labs, Lo and Lane, ages 10 and 11, are a bonded pair available for adoption through Grand Rivers Humane Society. They are good with children, dogs + may be compatible with cats, and will attend Saturday’s Chow Down on the Redlands event from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  KJCT
  • Mesa County is offering free winter coats for children and families in need at the Clifton Community Center, where new jackets in sizes from newborn to size seven are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as temperatures drop.  KJCT
  • The Grand Junction Lions Club awarded $120K in grants to 10 organizations Monday at Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita; Monument Little League received $25K for digital scoreboards and Roice-Hurst Humane Society got $21,520 for renovations + additional funding went to schools, a museum host, and search and rescue services.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • Black Citizens and Friends nonprofit hosted a children’s reading Monday at the Mesa County Library in Clifton to launch a week of events leading up to MLK Jr. Day on Jan. 19, and will host a second reading today at 6 p.m. at the Central Library to engage young readers.  KKCO 11
  • Local students won Mesa County's third annual 'I Voted' sticker contest to boost civic engagement for the upcoming election season - winners will be honored today at 9 a.m. at Mesa County Old Courthouse, 544 Rood Ave.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local media stores are seeing a renewed interest in vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and books today due to a growing desire among younger fans for tangible media. Triple Play Records and Out West Books report that Gen Z is driving this resurgence on the Western Slope.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Grand Junction Police Department is offering a Community Police Academy with ten weekly sessions starting Feb. 26 to May 2, including classes on Thursday nights and one Saturday; registration is now open online for residents to learn how the department operates.  KKCO 11
