COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Jan. 12, the Grand Junction Lions Club awarded $120K in grants to 10 nonprofits at Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita, funded by its carnival, parade and raffle. Raffle tickets are on sale for a live drawing on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. — featuring over $35K in prizes.  The Business Times
  • HomewardBound of the Grand Valley reached its fundraising goal of $120,000 through community donations + support from the City and Mesa County Commission to keep its North Avenue emergency shelter open through February. The organization plans to shift operations to its Pathways Family Shelter after winter.  The Business Times
  • Fergus, a five-year-old Border Collie mix, is available for adoption at 50% off through the new Pet of the Week program. The Roice-Hurst Humane Society in Grand Junction invites potential owners to meet him (open Tuesdays through Sundays) and find a gentle herder for their home.  KJCT
  • Community members can now vote online for the Colorado Mountain Winefest artwork, with three finalists (drawn from over a dozen statewide entries) available to choose from. Voting closes January 31 at noon, and the winning design will be revealed later that day.  KJCT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Citrolas Coffee Co. opened mid-December at 759 Horizon Drive, Unit A in the strip mall (after its sandwich shop moved next door) and now serves True Brew coffee with Italian pastries while planning to add more breakfast items.  The Business Times
  • Harrahs Salon relocated after a 34-year run to 759 Horizon Drive, Unit G with a downsized layout, new flooring, and ample parking that make visits smoother. The salon kept its signature pink-light tribute for former receptionist Kloey Lynn so her memory endures.  The Business Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning, Museums of Western Colorado hosted a roundtable at the Whitman building — across from Museum of the West — where community members, museum staff and public officials provided ideas for future programming, space needs and community impact, which executive director Shenna Hayden said will guide upcoming changes.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University announced Monday that Shannon Wadas has been hired as executive director of its Ruth Powell Hutchins Water Center. Wadas will lead water education, research and partnership efforts in Grand Junction (a local water hub) with support from a $300,000 grant from the Colorado River District.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • District 51 reported its second-highest graduation rate at 81.5% thanks to strong student support + improved tracking, with multilingual and migrant learners showing significant gains. The district also offers summer school credit recovery and GED help for students needing another path to graduation.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado’s Office of Economic Development awarded $412K for the RAPIDS project, which is designed to secure water infrastructure on the Colorado River. The funds will support a pilot program for workforce training at the CMU water center.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Food Bank of the Rockies partnered with local healthcare providers to help patients with chronic illnesses access nutrient-dense foods through doctor referrals. The ongoing Food for Health program began in 2024 and has distributed over 1,000 food boxes while planning to add grocery cards for continued healthy eating.  KJCT
