  • Fruita’s age-friendly effort offers seniors daily activities and soon will unveil raised garden beds for spring planting; Grand Junction is enhancing its senior center programs and planning sidewalk improvements (supports safer travel) for older residents.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Roice-Hurst Humane Society launches Pop Up Pack Walk, a community dog walking program held every Monday at noon in Grand Junction, Palisade, and Fruita — a chance for residents to enjoy a lunch break stroll with shelter pets.  KKCO 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Restaurant owners Matt and Ashley Chasseur are renovating the former Junct’n Square Pizza building at 119 N. Seventh St in downtown to launch their new eatery Tiki Bird+ they are cleaning up asbestos and addressing structural challenges, with a planned opening mid-April.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University's water center hired Shannon Wadas as its new executive director (she brings 15 years of natural resource management experience) to lead water research, education and dialogue. The center will form a board and develop a strategic plan with its Colorado River District partner.  KJCT
  • Area students were recognized on Jan. 17 for earning honor roll and Dean’s list spots at local universities including Adams State, Missouri State, and Lindsey Wilson.   • School District 51 is set to decide the fate of the 100-year-old Gateway School building (deadline Feb. 9) as residents weigh options to preserve, purchase, or relocate the structure. The decision comes amid concerns over deferred maintenance and liability risks.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on South Mesa Street will limit access from Park Square to Highway 6 and 50 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the Fruita Police Department building is closed to the public until further notice; police services remain available.  KKCO 11
  • County commissioners approved a one-year deal with IT Refresh to continue electronics recycling at the county's Hazardous Waste Facility in 2026 & the contract will not exceed $120,000 to protect soil and water.  Mesa County

  • This new year brings many food and drink updates to Grand Junction with events across town; 7th Street Community Cafe will serve breakfast starting Tuesday, Jan. 20 (at 2232 N.   • Freddie Mac data shows mortgage rates are slowly dropping and local experts say lower rates boost buying power as homes come off the market, creating a brief window for buyers in Grand Junction; broker Merrite Wyatt (from Bray Real Estate) said sellers (depending on supply) may soon adjust pricing.  KJCT
