ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jordyn Hailey, a local job seeker who resumed applying in February 2025, faced repeated rejections as the Grand Valley workforce lost about 1500 nonfarm positions over the year (data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Mesa County Workforce Center show the unemployment rate dropped to 3.6% by November).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife finalized a plan to restore wolverines by releasing up to 45 animals over three or more years in the Elk and West Elk mountains between Interstate 70 and US Highway 50.   • A Utah coalition asked the Surface Transportation Board to reaffirm its approval of an 88-mile oil train railway running through Colorado after legal rulings and a Dec. 2 train derailment raised environmental concerns — local officials urge further study to protect the Colorado River and endangered wildlife.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County commissioners approved three recycling contracts on Tuesday at the county landfill to boost mattress recycling, haul recyclables and extend electronics recycling. Jennifer Richardson said the deals, valued at $200K, $200K and $120K, will help reduce equipment damage by removing problematic materials from compactor wheels.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents are urged to test for radon this month because it can cause lung cancer in Mesa County homes; Citizens for Clean Air is lending free monitors for nearly three weeks and CDPHE is offering free short-term kits while supplies last - results above safe levels require contacting a licensed mitigator.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
