EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 1,150 District 51 juniors attended Workforce Development Day on Jan. 15 at Colorado Mesa University where local business and construction experts led sessions on entrepreneurship, construction, and financial literacy; the event offered hands-on insight into post-graduation careers & real-world skills.  The Business Times
  • Colorado Mesa University resumed classes on Jan. 20, and local traffic increased as students returned to campus, making coffee shops, grocery stores, and gyms busier. Students will leave for spring break on Mar. 16 (graduation on May 16 may bring more visitors).  KJCT
  • Mesa County Valley School District 51 reported its highest three-year graduation rate ever for the Class of 2025 at 81.9 percent and a five-year rate of 86.9 percent with a 1.5 percent dropout rate; Fruita Monument High School reached a 96 percent rate, its highest in five years.  The Business Times

  • Colorado State Patrol shared tailgating safety tips after investigating nearly 2,800 crashes last year that injured or killed more than 200 people — troopers advise drivers to stay calm and safely pull over if their front bumper or headlights become obscured by a following vehicle.  KJCT
  • Mesa County will begin a sidewalk & drainage project this summer near Broadway Elementary to add ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps on 22 1/2 Road and Greenbelt Drive. More details on construction timelines and traffic impacts will be shared as the start date nears.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • According to a Colorado Hospital Association report, 70% of state hospitals and 80% of rural facilities had unsustainable margins by late 2024, leading to service cuts that limit care.   • Behavioral healthcare provider Ava Health will open in Grand Junction on Feb. 9, operating from buildings including its headquarters at the former Rocky Mountain Health Plans facility at 2784 Crossroads Blvd. The company will hire 25 more employees soon & partner with local organizations to expand care in Mesa County.  The Business Times
