COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sunshine Community (a nonprofit of Sunshine Rides) offers life skills training, medical care and free rides to help unhoused residents transition into independent living. The program currently assists 6 participants at Sunshine Community House on Ute Avenue and plans to add more as it refines its approach.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • The Grand Mesa Nordic Council raised $1.6 million for the permanent Skyway Station building under construction on Grand Mesa to serve as a hub for skiers and local groups. The facility will open mid-April.  KKCO 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita celebrated the return of animatronic dinosaurs on Friday, funded by community donations + volunteer hours; visitors enjoy interactive features like water spitting and joystick controls. The exhibit is a hit with local kids and builds excitement ahead of the museum’s 60th anniversary.  KKCO 11
  • Josh Niernberg of Bin 707 Foodbar is one of 20 semifinalists for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Finalists will be announced on March 31 and winners revealed on June 15 in Chicago.  KKCO 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Colorado Community Foundation is accepting 38 scholarship applications for students until Sunday, Feb. 15—scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000. Caprock Academy earned Gold AP rating this year and launched a Concurrent Enrollment program with Colorado Mesa University so seniors can earn college credit.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • A sophomore from Palisade, Alivia Nicodemus (15), presented her CPR children’s book titled Two Hands at her former elementary school Independence Academy on Wednesday morning. She plans to self-publish the book online by year’s end and will seek grants for funding.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • District 51 officials said a state education funding error left a $600k gap, and lawmakers plan to include a fix in next week’s supplemental bill to restore funds to the re-adopted level for this year.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council approved a contract to transform a Main Street fountain area in the 400 block into a family play space with shade structures, play surfaces, seating and a checkerboard design. Parks and Recreation with Downtown Development Authority and a $70k contribution from NorthPeak (contractor) will begin construction this spring.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Starting February 1, TSA will offer TSA ConfirmID — a new option for travelers without a Real ID — in Grand Junction that charges $45, takes about 30 minutes, and may involve additional screening.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heavy winter weather expected this weekend in Grand Junction poses added risks for people with dementia, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America said. Caregivers are urged to secure keys and jackets and monitor for wandering to help avoid hypothermia and falls.  KKCO 11
