  • Monument Country Dance Club began as a small gathering and has grown into a thriving business in Grand Junction. The club holds line and swing dance lessons on Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. at Quincy Bar and on Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Mama Ree’s & continues to build community ties.  KKCO 11

CRIME NEWS

  • A customer paid with a counterfeit $100 bill at Triple Play Records on Main Street, prompting the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office to urge local business owners to check watermarks + raised ink on cash before accepting payments.  KKCO 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caprock Academy in Grand Junction used a $50,000 grant from the Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District to boost school security. The school purchased new radios for staff, added AEDs and cameras, and plans to install windows in doors for improved monitoring.  KJCT
  • Workforce Center officials announced a partnership with CMU Tech after a $2.46M federal grant to expand short-term training in high-demand fields. The program will offer job seekers pathways in health care, first response, transportation, technology and skilled trades (supported by Mesa Valley School District 51 and Community Hospital).  Mesa County
  • Parents who applied to District 51 School of Choice are receiving notifications today + they must reply by Feb. 4 to secure school placements in Grand Junction.  KJCT
  • Local businesses backed a nearly $225,000 federal grant that CMU Tech announced Wednesday to launch a Heat Pump Employment Ready program for students and trades workers — the funding will expand its Mobile Learning Lab fleet to offer training in Montrose and Delta.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State water officials warned that Lake Powell’s level could drop dangerously low if warm, dry weather continues; forecasts show nearly 2 million acre-feet less water than November. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction City Council will discuss a proposal on Feb. 4 to bring a Pecos League baseball team to Suplizio Field this summer, with plans to host 18 games to reduce wear on the complex (which follows the departure of the previous franchise).   • Colorado expert Vince Anderson from Skyward Mountaineering with 40 years of backcountry experience advises skiers, hikers and winter climbers to study terrain, carry emergency gear (including a tarp and lighter) and take avalanche courses to handle unpredictable mountain conditions.  KJCT

SPORTS NEWS

  • U.S. freestyle skier Charlie Mickel of Durango, who trained at Purgatory Resort, will represent Team USA at the Winter Olympics. He qualified during events in Finland, Quebec, and New Hampshire and will begin competing in the men’s moguls on Feb. 10 + his performance marks a milestone for his community.  KJCT
