  • Local nonprofit Light in the Darkness will host a Mega-Mega Clothing Giveaway on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 900 North 23rd Street to distribute free clothing and hygiene products to those in need — free meals will be served by Jubilee Church.  KJCT
  • At Monday's event at the Art Center of Western Colorado, Mesa County Women's Giving Club pooled $26,000 from 260 members for Grand Valley Pets Alive, which will help fund a spay and neuter clinic set for March 20-22 at the Mesa County Road and Bridge Shop.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scouting Colorado celebrates its 116th anniversary this weekend and now welcomes girls with boys (girls now make up 20% of members) in programs for kids aged 5 to 21. The organization offers outdoor activities and plans a Sports Breakfast Fundraiser on Feb. 23 in Denver.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County's treasurer office mailed property tax bills to homeowners and said they will arrive within days while those unable to pay in full by April 30 may make installments (first due March 2 and second due June 15), and homeowners using mortgage escrow need not take any action.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County recorded 139 flu-related hospitalizations since October - nearly double last year's 70 - and the health department will offer walk-in flu vaccines every Friday in February from 8 to 11 a.m. to protect vulnerable groups.  KJCT
  • Mesa County Public Health Department released its restaurant inspection blotter today covering multiple eateries from Mack to De Beque.   • St. Mary's Regional Hospital will hold a free heart health fair Friday (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) in its main lobby, offering blood pressure screenings, hands-only CPR training, and stress management tips without registration; families with children are welcome.  KKCO 11

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Housing Resources of Western Colorado secured $2.9 million to expand affordable housing across the region. The funds will support 30 new homes in Montrose + Parachute and help low- and moderate-income homeowners with essential repairs in Mesa, Garfield, and Rio Blanco counties.  KKCO 11

  • After the Jackalopes left, the city council considered a new deal with the Pecos League to bring semi-professional baseball back to Suplizio Field, with a decision made Wednesday, Feb. 4 — if approved, staff would soon finalize game dates.  KJCT
  • National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrated Western Slope female athletes as Josie Dehart joined Team USA, Olivia Reed-Thyne broke scoring and rebound records, 15-year-old Sienna Robinson prepared for a national dressage final, and runner Tristian Spence and Montrose girls won recent games.  KKCO 11
