COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HomewardBound’s North Avenue shelter will end new intakes Friday, Feb. 27 and lock its doors Saturday as community partners distribute winter gear and plan future support for unhoused residents. City and county officials are working with nonprofits to fill the service gap created by the closure.  KJCT
  • Board Connect returns on March 10, 4-6:30 p.m. at Clifton Community Center (3270 D 1/2 Road in Clifton) to bring community members and local nonprofits together for board service discussions. The free event offers volunteer opportunities and encourages online registration.  The Business Times
  • Mesa County Libraries is restocking its seed library today at the central branch, offering free seed packets for fruits, herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Patrons can take up to three packets per month with support from local businesses and gardeners.  KJCT
  • Bebe, a 14-year-old Siamese cat at Roice-Hurst Humane Society, is adoptable for about $45 (50% off) and does best as the only pet. RHHS will host a pet talk today at 5:30 p.m. at Carlson Vineyards Downtown Tasting Room to discuss how the housing crisis affects pets.  KKCO 11

  • Dr. Dane Christensen moved Fruita Family Dental to a 3,372 sqft office at 551 Kokopelli Blvd. on Jan. 6 after purchasing neighboring Lybrook Dental Center + all staff were retained as he prepares to extend services and hire additional dental hygienists.  The Business Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • West Winds Gallery of Fine Art will open its gallery at 504 Main St. in Grand Junction with events on Tuesday, March 3 and March 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. The renovated space will display local art and feature a wine tasting bar by Sauvage Spectrum Winery.  The Business Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Catholic high school, Chesterton Academy of St. Carlo Acutis, will open in August at First United Methodist Church (522 White Ave., downtown). Headmaster Brian Sargent, a former Palisade math teacher, expects to enroll 10 to 15 students first and build on that small start.  The Business Times
  • A $600K glitch threatening District 51's school funding was fixed through a supplemental bill at the Capitol following quick action by lobbyist Amy Atwood. A similar correction for next year is expected in the main school-finance bill, though longer-term budget pressures remain.  The Business Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County commissioners approved a wildfire resiliency code — mandated by state law — that requires fire-resistant materials for new construction and re-roofing in Wildland Urban Interface areas. The code must be adopted by April 1 and will affect projects beginning July 1.  KJCT
  • Mesa County will continue improvements along 32 ½ Road to boost safety+connectivity and traffic flow in Clifton, building on projects like last year's roundabout and shared-use path near the Grand Valley Canal. Securing right-of-way remains key for completing the corridor upgrade.  Mesa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local caregiver Natalie Hernandez urged fellow caregivers to pour love into themselves while Right at Home honored its workers during National Caregivers Week. Hernandez stressed that self-care is vital (after years balancing client care) as she learned the importance of looking after her own needs.  KJCT
