COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hilltop CEO Mike Stahl will retire at the end of 2026 after nearly 40 years leading the nonprofit that serves residents in western Colorado counties. Hilltop’s board has already begun the search for a successor to guide the organization through growing funding pressures and community needs (including expanded services).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Bass is a two-year-old Pit Bull mix seeking his forever home, noted for loving car rides (and getting along with other dogs) and best suited for households with older children, according to the Grand Rivers Humane Society.  KKCO 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Community Hospital and Montrose Regional Health signed a letter of intent to form a new parent company that will share back-office services like IT + supply purchasing, a cost-saving move expected to save $19 to $31M annually, boost jobs and maintain hospital independence.  The Business Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Mesa County increased from just under $3 to about $3.37 a gallon this week as seasonal refinery maintenance and a Middle East conflict influenced global oil markets (AAA data shows). Experts said further rises are likely when refineries shift to summer blend production.  KKCO 11
  • Producers at Varaison Vineyard & Winery and Talbott’s Mountain Gold are preparing for irrigation season in early April and tackling concerns about zebra mussels and water shortages from a dry winter; Talbott Farms will start for frost benefits while Varaison may delay until debris clears (both use Colorado River water).  KJCT
  • Gas prices in Mesa County rose more than 37 cents in a week as refineries start seasonal maintenance and global oil shifts driven by Middle East conflict push prices higher. AAA noted that while prices are expected to continue climbing, current reports show some market stability.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction is switching to a single-stream recycling system that lets residents toss all recyclables, including glass, into one bin. The city will open a 58,000 sqft facility on 10 acres later this year, funded by a nearly $10M grant + it is set to serve regional needs.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched its 'Oh Shell No' campaign to curb zebra mussels threatening Grand Junction’s irrigation canals and water systems. CPW will boost field sampling and open inspection stations this month, with additional measures set for early May (aiming to protect agriculture).  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction is set to upgrade Crosby Avenue with bike lanes, a shared-use path, lighting, and pavement improvements starting in April — the nearly $3 million project, partly supported by $1 million in state funds, will boost safety and connectivity from Rimrock to Main Street, with work expected to finish in October.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at California Baptist University studied a caterpillar virus and found that infected cells reorganize into small compartments instead of dying, a discovery that may help explain how similar viruses affect human cells and lead to diseases such as cancer.  KJCT
