CRIME NEWS

  • FBI Denver arrested a man with alleged drug cartel ties in Grand Junction in partnership with Colorado Springs Police, Pueblo Police, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office—officials stated he is a foreign national with a violent criminal history.  KJCT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Egg prices soared to $5.90 a dozen in February — up 10.4% — pushing local Easter event planner Karoline Valdez to cancel real egg dyeing in favor of plastic eggs due to high costs. The price rise may lead families to adjust their celebrations even as a USDA report last week said egg shortages are easing.  KJCT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A student-led petition by the Phi Alpha Rho Sigma Tau Social Work Honor Society condemns CMU’s decision to host controversial speaker Jared Taylor in late March — the online petition, started on March 11, has gathered 1,030 signatures and calls for the administration to reconsider its plans.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Colorado Works Program gives temporary cash help and strong support to families (including pregnant women and families with children) so they can find work and move toward self-sufficiency. Applicants must provide proof of income and basic information at Mesa County Department of Human Services, the Workforce Center, or online.  Mesa County
  • Brock Hale, a Grand Junction resident, was sworn in as a new deputy by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend—he is the second in his family to serve following his father’s twenty-year career in law enforcement.  KKCO 11
  • The Mesa County Commissioners board for 2025 includes Chair Cody Davis, Commissioner Bobbie Daniel and Commissioner JJ Fletcher (districts 1, 2, 3) and they plan to serve the community. They will work each day to turn shared priorities into action.  Mesa County
  • The City of Grand Junction will hold a special workshop on March 26th — a meeting to talk about next steps — to decide the future of the Resource Center as its lease ends on April 15th. Mayor Abe Herman said staff have had trouble finding a new location — some locals said the center is very important for people without homes — as the city searches for a solution.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health released its 2024 Annual Impact Report which showed over 100 staff members worked to keep the community healthy by ensuring safe food in restaurants and stopping disease in childcare centers — Executive Director Xavier Crockett said the team will continue its work in 2025.  Mesa County
