COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roice-Hurst Humane Society is hosting a St. Patrick adoption special this week at its shelter, where multiple puppies including Big Bad Wolf (a playful, calm pup) are available. Adopters can draw a four-leaf clover for a fee discount ranging from 10% to 100% off.  KKCO 11
  • Ag Awareness Week brings events celebrating local agriculture this week. It includes a screening of World Without Cows at Asteria Theatre on March 24 + a cow adoption event from March 23 to 27, inviting community members to connect with local farmers, ranchers and producers.  KKCO 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Museums of Western Colorado will hold their final roundtable discussion on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dinosaur Journey Museum in Fruita (75 seats available) to gather community feedback on upcoming revitalization projects.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dan Zimmerman of Good Steward Farms warned that warmer weather and rising oil prices will push up produce costs this year. He is using water-saving practices and building soil fertility (to cope with shrinking farmland from urban growth) on his local farm.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction firefighters are working with other teams to contain a wildfire near Custer that has spread to nearly 9,000 acres and is 27% contained, with crews having begun efforts Monday night.  KJCT
  • Grand Junction firefighters have been helping to contain a large wildfire near Custer in South Dakota; the blaze has grown to nearly 9,000 acres (27% contained) since Monday night.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Polis activated the Colorado Drought Task Force in response to record warmth and near-record low snowpack. The task force (comprising Public Safety, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Local Affairs) will monitor water supplies and agriculture impacts and advise on emergency measures.  KJCT
  • A bipartisan bill to expand the Agricultural Future Loan Program passed both chambers and now awaits Gov. Jared Polis's signature; the measure will let water conservancy districts, ditch and reservoir companies, and irrigation districts offer loans so new farmers can buy farmland at risk of development.  KKCO 11
  • Record warmth and low snowpack in Colorado prompted Governor Polis to activate the Colorado Drought Task Force today, with experts from Public Safety, Natural Resources, Agriculture, & Local Affairs working together to monitor water and agricultural impacts and advise on emergency measures if required.  KKCO 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment said the Colorado Food Program delivered over 15 million meals and snacks last year to children and seniors via about 1,500 local partners during National Child and Adult Care Food Program Week. The program reimburses care providers for healthy meals and invites interested providers to call for more details.  KJCT
