COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Community Food Bank of Grand Junction began painting its new mural on March 23 after selecting a winning design by Maggie Mulcahy on February 24. Volunteers joined her to add local details—like sphinx moths, monarch caterpillars, chokeberries, and chanterelle mushrooms—and the project is expected to be finished by March 31. KJCT
- ➤ Food Bank of the Rockies rescued 3.7 million pounds of food (1.3 million from chain stores) last year as rising food prices have increased hunger, and its Food Rescue program helped deliver donations fast to small food banks on the Western Slope. The program grew by 2% last year and is expected to grow about 4% by the end of the year (adding roughly 148,000 pounds) to help feed more families. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

- ➤ Rodney Vigil was arrested on March 20th for allegedly stealing a patrol rifle from a town police car during a break-in on November 21st, 2024—he faces many charges including theft and criminal trespass with a bond set at $7,500. KKCO 11
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eight middle schoolers from Mesa County Valley School District 51 qualified for a national LEGO League competition that will take place from June 13–15 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute after winning a regional qualifier in Fruita and competing in Denver's state championships in December. Coach Liz Fitzgerald said the team is learning Python coding and raising funds through local events—such as a yard sale at Mesa View and a barbecue near Redlands Safeway—to cover their trip expenses. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Colorado House advanced legislation on a bill that will require a permit and firearm safety training to purchase powerful firearms with detachable magazines, effective August 1. The 23 page bill includes 30 amendments and does not affect the sale of shotguns, semiautomatic firearms with fixed magazines, most handguns or the possession of current firearms — keeping current owners unaffected. - ➤ Warmer weather has drawn many golfers to Redlands Mesa Golf Course well before mid-spring, and the course quickly hired extra staff to keep up with demand — Director Maxwell Weckerly noted that play usually peaks in May and September despite a season that runs from March through October.
