ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Grand Junction Police said a man who was riding on the rear hood of a moving car at North 19th St. and Bunting Ave at about 1:40 a.m. on Thursday fell and suffered life-threatening injuries including a serious head injury—he was taken to hospital and the investigation is ongoing.  KJCT

CRIME NEWS

  • A student at Caprock Academy was arrested Thursday morning after police found a handgun in the student's backpack following a report from a fellow student — school officials immediately placed the campus in a shelter in place order and no one was hurt.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County Elections has posted finalists for its I Voted sticker design contest made by students in grades one to 12. Residents can vote for two elementary school designs and two middle and high school designs from March 24 through April 18+ the winning design will be announced in April and used on the 2-inch stickers at the November election.  Mesa County
  • Grand Junction will host a free two-hour ADU workshop on April 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fire Station Administration training room at 625 Ute Ave—part of the city's housing strategy. Community members will review a tool kit on design, permitting and construction—registration is required.  City of Grand Junction
  • Grand Junction City Council will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss a lease extension for the unhoused resource center at 261 Ute Ave that is set to close on April 15. Service providers from HomewardBound + United Way are exploring options like paring down hours and boosting security to ensure vulnerable residents continue to receive help if a permanent site is not found.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Local rancher Janie Van Winkle said Colorado Parks and Wildlife has not given detailed wolf locations, which has led to trust issues among ranchers protecting their livestock — CPW explained that GPS collars on the wolves record positions every four hours but only send updates once a day to keep the animals safe.  KJCT
  • Beginning March 31, Mesa County and Mountain Valley Contracting, Inc. will widen and replace Coffman Road north of Whitewater—resulting in a full closure for the project area during work from Monday through Friday with possible Saturday work. The project is scheduled to finish in October.  Mesa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC cut about $11.4 billion in COVID grants, and Mesa County Public Health said the loss of nearly $350,000 could affect part salaries for up to 10 employees—about 12% of its workforce. The agency added that the funds helped rebuild its health capacity to better guard against future crises while COVID continues to affect our community.  KJCT
