- ➤ Princess and Sosuke are eight-week-old kittens now adoptable at Roice-Hurst Humane Society in Grand Junction—both have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. The shelter will host a Kitten Shower Donation Drive on April 19 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. KJCT
- ➤ The First Congregational Church of Grand Junction will host its Taste of Africa fundraiser on April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1425 N. 5th Street. Guests will sample African dishes, learn African dances, and buy handmade East African crafts—ticket sales and donations will fund a solar-powered irrigation system for a Maasai village in Kenya. - ➤ The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office released its 2024 crime report showing overall crime declined yet violent crime increased slightly due to more aggravated assault and nonconsensual sex offenses while property crimes fell 28.89% and auto theft dropped sharply thanks to a new crime center that raised clearance rates — Sheriff Todd Rowell stressed the role of community support. - ➤ A man was arrested Monday after deputies responded to animal abuse reports on the 500 block of Garfield Drive where he allegedly threw and struck a 4-month-old puppy before tying it under a porch— the dog has visible injuries on her hind leg and abdomen and now requires emergency surgery coordinated by Grand Rivers Humane Society. - ➤ Elevate Kids’ Fun Run will take place Sunday at Las Colonias Park to raise money for Mesa County Valley School District 51 P.E. programs, offering 2.5-kilometer, 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races that start at 8:30 a.m. Participants register on behalf of a school so part of their fee goes to that school’s program, with the three schools receiving the most registrations earning an extra donation (past runs supported school upgrades) (all ages and abilities may participate). - ➤ Mesa County Department of Human Services is promoting National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April by planting blue pinwheels across the county and urging community members to support families and learn the signs of abuse (with services such as family therapy and case management). - ➤ Mesa County and its partners are updating the Stormwater Management Manual — a project webpage is live for contractors, developers, and municipalities to view draft chapters, submit comments, and sign up for email updates. The update, approved at a Feb. 21 public hearing, will help use best practices to manage stormwater in Grand Junction and nearby communities. Mesa County
- ➤ Mesa County introduced a new ballot verifier tool — a free digital platform that lets residents verify ballots dating back to November 2023 — to improve election transparency ahead of municipal elections. KJCT
