COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Center for Children is hosting Seeds of Support, a fundraiser to raise money for child-abuse survivor services in Mesa County, on April 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Junction Elks Lodge—speakers, dinner by The Cowboy and the Rose and a silent auction will support vital services for affected children.  The Business Times
  • Grand Junction locals have likely noticed the large white building under construction at the roundabout at 12th Street and Horizon Drive—this structure is the new temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that has taken three years to build. Residents will have the only chance to enter during an open house from Sept. 11 to Sept. 27, except on Sundays.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • The Business Incubator Center launched Camino al Exito on April 2 to provide Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs with classes, workshops and free advising—volunteer advisors Sonia Gutierrez and Eric Gil will help guide local business owners through the new program. The initiative expands familiar resources into Spanish so language is no longer a barrier for Latino entrepreneurs.  The Business Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Fruita police responded early Tuesday to a call about a verbal dispute on South Gemini Circle that escalated into a hostage situation when 42-year-old James Dupree held a woman after she asked for help — Mesa County and Grand Junction SWAT teams used tear gas and crisis negotiations to secure her release before taking Dupree into custody at 11:12 a.m.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Bruin Waste Management will launch a recycling division in the Grand Valley on a 10.5-acre site at 365 32 Road, with support from Gov. Jared Polis announced Tuesday. The planned facility will create about 30 jobs and use advanced sortation technology to cut transportation costs and boost recycling rates in the region—helping meet local sustainability goals.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • On April 8, Mesa County Commissioners approved a contract with Roth Sheppard Architects to build a justice center annex for over $2.6 million—covering base services and reimbursement expenses.  KKCO 11
  • The Mesa County Workforce Center held a Create a Resume workshop on April 8th at 9 a.m. at 512 29 ½ Road and will host Rapid Resume Review tomorrow at 9 a.m., Interview Prep on April 16th at 9 a.m., and Job Fair Game Plan on April 21st to prepare job seekers for the Grand Valley Job Fair at Lincoln Park on April 24th—participants may print resumes and get key tags at the Resource Room.  Mesa County
  • Starting April 12th, Grand Junction residents can request two free tree seedlings delivered to their homes as part of Arbor Day, with the first 200 requests receiving delivery. Additional seedlings will be available at Arbor Fest on April 25 at Lincoln Park.  KJCT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction will begin the 25 Road expansion this fall — a project that takes one-third of Ginny and James Sanville's property at 625 25 Road, which they bought in June 2021 without knowing about the road widening. The couple said they were blindsided by the notice and must accept compensation that does not cover the $50,000 estimated cost to rebuild their garage — leaving them facing a lengthy and disruptive construction process.  The Business Times

  • Golf courses in the Grand Valley continue to see high play since COVID restrictions eased, with Adobe Creek having 68,000 starts in 2024 and Chipeta nearly doubling its earlier numbers while the city-owned courses played 73,500 rounds. City officials said they are keeping rates low and offering programs—efforts that help keep golf fun and affordable.  The Business Times
