  • Daily Sentinel reporter Nathan Deal received two awards for his work in the Top of the Rockies Excellence in Journalism competition including a first place for his coverage of Colorado Avenue’s business resurgence in downtown Grand Junction and a third place for his report on local Title I schools at Mesa County Valley School District 51. Managing Editor Dale Shrull earned two second-place awards for his columns — one for serious columns and one for sports columns — among more than 80 media outlets from Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In April 1948, Richard Gordon Babbel invented a portable Geiger Counter that gave local prospectors a lighter and more accurate tool to search for uranium in Grand Junction—his innovation led him to launch Uranium Engineering Co. House Bill 25-1040 was signed on March 31, adding nuclear energy to the state's clean energy list and promising continued interest in uranium prospecting.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 11, Colorado State Patrol, Grand Junction Police and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office held a five-hour surge on Patterson Road—60 motorists were contacted, 44 citations were issued and 3 drivers with outstanding warrants were arrested, including one detained for assault on a peace officer.  KKCO 11
  • On April 10, Colorado State Patrol and Denver Police searched a Denver residence and recovered three-quarters of marijuana stolen from a secured trailer on April 4 along with a stolen GMC truck—no arrests have been made and a Chevrolet Silverado in custody matched surveillance video of the incident.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent measurements show that northern basins reached above normal snowpack levels on April 9 (the Yampa/White/Little Snake basin recorded 113% and the Colorado headwaters 101% of normal) while southern basins peaked at 90% or 76% of normal. Forecasts indicate that regional streamflows will reflect this split with northern flows near normal and southern flows—and runoff into Lake Powell expected at just 67% of average.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Grand Junction Police Department released its first quarterly report for 2025 and reported 20,312 calls for service, 953 arrests—241 felonies and 712 misdemeanors—and 384 traffic crashes from January through March. Officers made 2,787 traffic stops with 1,077 citations and the new animal control unit handled 1,164 animal calls, reuniting 85 animals with their owners.  KKCO 11
  • The Grand Junction Police Department released its first quarterly report for 2025 showing that between January and March it responded to 20,312 calls for service and made 953 arrests, including 241 felony and 712 misdemeanor charges. Officers also handled 384 traffic crashes, with 286 non-injury and 98 injury-related incidents, and made 2,787 traffic stops that led to 1,077 citations — the animal control unit handled 1,164 calls and reunited 85 animals with their owners.  KJCT
  • Grand Junction voters can choose the winning 'I Voted' sticker design for the November election from 16 student submissions after voting began on March 24th and will end on April 18th. Voters are allowed one vote that picks two stickers — one for elementary schools and one for middle/high schools — with the final design to be announced later in April.  KKCO 11

  • Local soccer club Fire FC hosted its second annual Challenge Cup Soccer Tournament at Canyon View Park with 66 teams—included teams from Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico—competing for boys and girls ages 6 to 15; final matches are played today.  KJCT
