COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross of Western Colorado is asking for local and national volunteers to help with disaster services, case work, blood drives, and youth preparedness classes during Volunteer Appreciation month. Next month they will host a blood drive in Grand Junction+ Montrose+ Gypsum.  KKCO 11
  • Roice-Hurst Humane Society will host its annual Kitten Shower Donation Drive on Saturday, April 19 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its facility on 362 28 Road to collect tax-deductible donations that include items such as formula + bottles to support foster caregivers for the expected surge of kittens.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Grand Junction’s annual Southwest Arbor Fest will occur at Lincoln Park from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. this Saturday and is sponsored by the city to mark Arbor Day and Earth Day. CRIME NEWS

  • A former Clear Creek County sheriff's deputy, Andrew Buen, was sentenced to three years in prison with a mandatory two-year parole after he fatally shot 22-year-old Christian Glass during an incident on a dirt road (court records show he was convicted of criminally negligent homicide).  KKCO 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local middle and high school students are showcasing over 300 pieces of art at the annual Altrusa Art Fair (its 62nd year) organized with the Art Center of Western Colorado. The free event will award winners (ribbon and bragging rights) on April 19th and run until the 25th.  KJCT
  • The Palisade International Honeybee Festival, held this past weekend in Palisade, will return in 2026 at Cross Orchards Historical Site — 3702 F Road in Grand Junction. The festival outgrew its downtown venue and will focus on educating the public about protecting honeybees and other pollinators.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • GMUG National Forest will start a prescribed burn on April 21 to burn 500 to 1,000 acres of overgrown vegetation near Lands’ End Road—located about 20 miles east of Grand Junction—to reduce wildfire threats. Smoke may be visible in Grand Junction, Whitewater, Palisade and Delta for several days as crews work for two to three days.  WesternSlopeNow.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The IRS warns that the tax deadline is today, April 15, and filing late will add a fee starting at 5% of any tax due that increases by 5% each month up to a maximum of 25%. Residents who need help may visit the local VITA branch (managed by Gary Hype, a Colorado Mesa University professor) or file an extension to reach the October 15 deadline.  KJCT
