- ➤ Two people died in a residential fire in a two-story home on the 1100 block of Gunnison Avenue Wednesday morning when firefighters responded at 9:46 a.m. after reports of visible smoke and flames— the blaze also claimed a dog and a cat, and its cause remains under investigation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mesa County Valley School District 51 reported Tuesday night that House Bill 25-1320 will avoid funding cuts by extending the school finance formula and keeping current funding levels — the district now projects a $1 million increase for 2025-2026. - ➤ At their April 15th public meeting, Mesa County commissioners sent a letter to U.S. Representative Jeff Hurd endorsing House resolution 1125 to move the BLM headquarters from Washington—D.C. to Grand Junction, a shift expected to bring good paying jobs and better serve rural communities. KJCT
- ➤ At their April 15 hearing, Mesa County Commissioners sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd supporting the LOCAL Act, which would permanently move the BLM headquarters to Grand Junction—saving money on lease, salary, and travel costs and protecting over 300 jobs. The letter noted that since the 2020 move, the agency improved local services and decision-making on federal land management. Mesa County
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Colorado Mesa University’s sociology department teamed with Mesa County Public Health for a senior capstone project that surveys young adults ages 18 to 30 about their access to mental health care in Mesa County. - ➤ HomewardBound has launched RecoveryBound, a free 18-month program that supports people experiencing homelessness on their journey to sobriety. The program started in 2022 with six months of detox and 12 months of aftercare—its first graduation will be held on May 16. KKCO 11
