CRIME NEWS

  • On April 17th around 8:10 a.m., officers detained a student at Grand Junction High School after the student carried a knife and threatened to kill someone, and the student was then taken to the Division of Youth Services on charges of Felony Menacing, Unlawfully Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Weapon Possession on School Grounds (no injuries were reported and there is no ongoing threat).  KKCO 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dexter and the Moonrocks performed at Mesa Theater on Wednesday evening—marking their second visit to Grand Junction with the first concert of their new tour Happy to Be Here and a first-ever television interview with reporter Wylee Mitchell. The band will release their new EP Happy to Be Here on May 7th.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, residents in Grand Junction are reminded by Colorado law to remove bird feeders, secure trash and grills, and avoid leaving pet or livestock food as bears end hibernation. If you see a bear, use loud noises (like yelling) to drive it away (for example, with a vehicle alarm) to avoid dangerous encounters and citations.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction is hiring a deputy city manager and chief financial officer to strengthen its city operations. The deputy city manager (annual salary $210,000-$235,000) and chief financial officer (annual salary $190,000-$215,000) roles will support quicker responses and better coordination across departments.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Starting in June, the Grand Junction Regional Airport will raise its maximum daily parking rate to $14 while extending free parking from 20 minutes to two hours.   • Mesa County commissioners approved a letter on April 15 supporting Rep. Jeff Hurd’s Productive Public Lands Act—this bill aims to restore access to public lands by reissuing resource management plans to benefit local agriculture, energy, and recreation.  Mesa County
  • The Grand Junction City Council discussed redesign plans for Whitman Park based on community surveys that prioritized safety and lighting. The plan features a stage for many purposes, an ice rink, a dog park and a food truck area — phase one is expected to begin in 2025 with a $1.9 million fund.  KJCT

  • Mesa County Public Health Epidemiologist Will Rausch appeared on Midday Live in Grand Junction to break down 2024 respiratory trends—explaining which illnesses the department is watching and advising residents on how to stay safe.  KJCT
