COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Redlands Community Center—a 106-year-old venue that hosts weddings and community events—will host a free craft fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at 2463 Broadway to raise funds for interior upgrades (while preserving its historic charm).  KKCO 11
  • During Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, the Mesa County Department of Human Services aired a KAFM Community Affairs segment to highlight local efforts for family stability. Family Empowerment Supervisor Lauren Miranda detailed support programs (including a Warmline pilot) that connect families with housing, education, and therapeutic services.  Mesa County
  • Rez Vet, a nonprofit that provides low-cost vet care on tribal lands, is now expanding services to its hometown. It held a successful drive-up clinic at Sprouts in April and will host another clinic on May 3 at Tractor Supply Co. (Local sponsors supported these events.)  KJCT
  • Drake, a five-year-old lab mix (known to love treats) is available for adoption at the Grand Rivers Humane Society today. He is described as friendly and a good fit for families with kids and other pets if properly introduced.  KKCO 11
  • The Palisade Library reopens today after a nearly half year closure that began on Nov. 12. It underwent repairs to address structural issues and is located at (119 W. 3rd Street) in Palisade.  KJCT
  • Meals on Wheels Mesa County received a $250,000 donation during Monday's ceremony at its headquarters at 698 Long Acre Dr. as Volunteers of America Colorado & Intermountain St. Mary’s end a 36-year partnership, with funds to be paid over five years to serve seniors.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Five-year-old Drake, a treat-loving lab mix at the Grand Rivers Humane Society, is looking for his forever home. The friendly dog, known for his chill, goofy personality, suits families with kids, other dogs (and possibly cats) ready for backyard fetch and neighborhood walks.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the University of Washington have found that early plant growth is reducing water in the Colorado River by using it sooner than expected. The study shows that reduced spring precipitation and more sunny days lead to faster snowmelt — affecting local water forecasts and planning for users.  KKCO 11
  • Researchers from the University of Washington explained that less spring rain and earlier plant growth reduce Colorado River flow today — leading to less accurate forecasts for water users relying on snowpack data. Better planning is needed as farmers and others adjust planting decisions.  KJCT

  • Three Mesa County Colorado State Patrol employees received awards on Thursday: Dennis Guffey was named Trooper of the Year, Madison Evridge Port of Entry Officer of the Year, and Tracy Suppes-Maloney Professional Staff Member of the Year.   • Phil Weiser will attend the Western Colorado Economic Summit in Grand Junction this week in person while U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet joins virtually from Washington, D.C.
