ECONOMY NEWS

  • At the Western Colorado Economic Summit held Thursday at CMU, Economics Professor Nathan Perry outlined local, state, and national trends, noting reduced population forecasts in Mesa County and a slowing job market while highlighting Garfield County’s projected growth.   • More than 500 community leaders gathered today at the CMU ballroom for the Western Colorado Economic Summit to plan strategies for rural development + economic growth. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local teacher Noelle Westcott received a national STEM research grant to help students at Central High School perform hands-on experiments with college lab equipment. The funding, part of 41 grants awarded by Society for Science, supports science projects in 16 states.  KJCT
  • Colorado Mesa University celebrated World Book Day on April 23 at its campus with literary tarot readings, book crafts, and group readings, and it collected over 2,000 donated books (to promote literacy).  KKCO 11
  • District 51 students get hands-on training working with shelter dogs through the Mindful Mutts program (a joint effort by Mesa County Animal Services, the District 51 Career Center, Angels in the Making and RSVP); learning basic commands boosts the dogs' adoptability (and builds skills for future animal-care jobs).  KKCO 11
  • Colorado Mesa University hosted its first annual Intersectionality Fair today to highlight campus accessibility challenges through hands-on activities (including a simulated experience of using a wheelchair). Organizers plan future improvements to make the campus more inclusive.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Colorado House passed Alyssa's Youth Concussion and Mental Health Protect Act on April 21, requiring youth coaches to complete biennial mental health training to spot signs of stress, anxiety, and depression after concussions; the course offered by CHASSA will take effect on Aug. 12.  KJCT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residential sales fell 8.2% in Q1 (551 homes sold) and volume dropped to $250 million despite a modest March pickup; median prices rose 3% to $409,000 with 708 active listings and 187 new permits reported by Bray Real Estate, while rising mortgage rates may slow future sales.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
