COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Grand Junction resident Dawn Weight, who has been in a wheelchair since collapsing in March, got a temporary ramp built by the local fire department (led by Captain Kurt Winger and his Station 2 C Shift Crew) to help her safely enter and exit her home. Weight said the new ramp has boosted her independence while she works to secure funds for a permanent solution.  KKCO 11
  • The City of Grand Junction will celebrate National Bike Month in May by partnering with local groups to host events such as the Monument Trail Ribbon Cutting on May 2 (5 p.m.) and Bike to Work Day on May 16 (7-9 a.m. at City Hall) while offering free bike safety resources online.  WesternSlopeNow.com

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 24 at 10:30 a.m., officers stopped a car on the 500 Block of Reed Mesa Drive for suspicious activity; when the driver (38-year-old Kevin Anderson) fled on foot and barricaded himself in a nearby home, SWAT and Mesa County Sheriff's officers responded, issued a shelter-in-place notification, and arrested him along with 38-year-old Gabriel Martinez on outstanding warrants.  KJCT
  • Grand Junction police arrested three drivers for DUI in less than six hours—first, Cody Neal was stopped on Thursday near North 23rd Street and Elm Avenue for speeding and failing to stop at a stop sign; next, Emilio Suazo was arrested early Friday after a single-vehicle crash where fentanyl was found; and finally, Kyce Santiago was arrested at around 4:30 a.m. following a hit-and-run collision that damaged a yard and a power pole.  WesternSlopeNow.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa View Elementary held a ceremony Friday afternoon to honor its status as a U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School and Principal Stacey Cohen received the Terrel H. Bell award for leadership. Only four schools statewide earned the honor among over 350 nationwide — with just two being elementary schools.  WesternSlopeNow.com

  • Colorado Mesa University will host a debate on Tuesday at 5:30 pm about moving federal agencies like the BLM away from Washington—two former agency leaders will share their views after Rep. Jeff Hurd introduced a bill to return the BLM headquarters to Grand Junction.  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Mesa County Public Health is hosting a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine clinic from 9 a.m. to noon at its Grand Junction office on 510 29 1/2 Road — it offers low- and no-cost options for people 12 months and older and for babies 6 months or older traveling in outbreak areas — following reports of four measles cases statewide as of April 25.  Colorado Public Radio
