COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mesa County Libraries is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a partnership with Whitewater Hill Vineyards to release commemorative wines Well Read and Grape Expectations that will fund library improvements and programs. Community members can enjoy a scavenger hunt, live music, food and crafts at Discovery Garden from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 2.  KJCT
  • Gaia, an 11-month-old hound mix in a foster home with other dogs and two cats, is looking for a forever home. The Grand Rivers Humane Society will host an adoption event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Chow Down (2500 Broadway).  KJCT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Grand Junction resident warned others when her 16-year-old dog suffered severe burns from lingering hot campfire coals near 21 Road earlier this month—fire officials stress even inactive fires can stay dangerously hot if not properly doused, and the pet's recovery may take up to a year.  KJCT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction’s Q1 sales tax collections are 4.8% higher than last year, with March up nearly 7.5% compared to March 2025. Chief Financial Officer Jay Valentine and City Manager Mike Bennett expect strong growth will help meet budget goals despite rising gas + energy costs.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school graduates joined the military by taking their oath at Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial Park in Fruita on Saturday (the Western Slope Blue Star Mothers hosted the event as families and veterans gathered to mark the milestone).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Department of Agriculture are hosting a five-day range rider training course at the Grand Junction Convention Center from April 27 through May 1 to teach riders to reduce livestock conflict with wolves (15 riders have been contracted for 2026).  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Redlands Water and Power is urging customers to conserve water amid growing drought concerns, suggesting measures like watering early and taking shorter showers (conditions are worse than 2002). The utility warns that if current habits persist, lower canal water levels may be needed soon.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers passed a bill changing state law to let Parks and Wildlife fine first-time offenders up to $200 for leaving uncovered garbage that may attract bears (penalties increase for later offenses and the measure awaits Senate review).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
