COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mama Monet is a sweet cat that loves cuddles + she is now ready for a permanent home after being spayed at the Roice-Hurst Humane Society in Grand Junction, with $50 adoptions available at Empty the Shelters from May 1 through 17.  KJCT
  • RiversEdge West will host its annual Rubber Ducky Scramble on May 16 at 3 p.m. at Butterfly Pond in Las Colonias Park to raise funds for river education and stewardship; participants can buy numbered duck entries online for a chance to win prizes including a whitewater packraft.  The Business Times
  • Grand Junction officials will repair a section of Redlands Parkway Trail next week after riders reported safety issues. Parts of the trail will close for repairs and a bike detour will run along Redlands Parkway to the Blue Heron Boat Ramp until the path reopens at the end of May.  KKCO 11
  • The Christi Reece Group announced that its Circle Fund donated $15,000 to local nonprofits, with Two Rivers Wildfire Coalition receiving $8,000, Grand Valley Outdoor Recreation Coalition $5,000 and Grand Valley Equine Assisted Learning Center $2,000 after community nominations and client votes.  The Business Times

  • Sitto’s food truck will remain closed this summer as owner Tonya Wren renovates a former Outlaw Cafe unit into an Arabic-food restaurant at Cottonwood Mall (2493 U.S. Highway 6 and 50). Renovation began mid-April and is expected to extend through summer.  The Business Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mesa County lost its only USDA-inspected meat processing plant when Mountain Meats stopped federal inspection, forcing ranchers to drive to Delta's Homestead Natural Meats or Craig's Fitch Ranch Artisan Meat Co. amid drought and rising costs.  The Business Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Bobbie Gross hosted the county’s first mock election for high school juniors and seniors, letting them see ballot filling (and vote verification, handling and tabulation) so they can share the process with their families. The event built understanding of vote safeguards for future elections.  Mesa County
  • Thirteen School District 51 staff received over $10,500 in wellness grants from the D51 Foundation funded by White Iced Celebration events. Funds will buy technology + create regulation stations and raise garden beds to support student and staff well-being.  The Business Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers, using rafts and paddleboards (and kayaks), removed 2.7 tons of trash from the Colorado River on April 18 near Grand Junction amid low water levels and chilly conditions. The annual cleanup, a Mesa County tradition, uncovered unusual items and will adapt to emerging challenges in the waterway.  Colorado Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Multiple city and CDOT road projects are causing travel restrictions in Grand Junction this week, with lane closures and detours on Four Canyons Parkway, D ½, and I-70B, plus changes on Patterson Rd. Motorists should plan ahead and follow posted signs as work continues into early May.  City of Grand Junction
  • On Monday, state wildlife officials held a five-day range rider training course in Grand Junction to boost skills for reducing conflicts between wolves and livestock.   • Two Mesa County Workforce Center staff were honored at a Denver summit for their strong contributions to workforce development. Jeana Brown received the Excellence in Customer Service Award and Victor Carreras was recognized for his leadership in connecting clients with jobs.  The Business Times

  • Grand Junction faces a housing shortage as rising population and CMU enrollment leave about 2,100 rental units lacking plus a 3.1% vacancy rate. The Salt Flats Project will start construction later this year and may bring relief in the future.  The Business Times
  • Construction has resumed on the next phase of Crawford Row townhomes at Dos Rios north of downtown after a delay since Phase 1 sold out. Crews are building 12 energy-efficient units and will take reservations once foundations are poured.  The Business Times
