- ➤ GJ Union Depot will host a free open house on May 10 to celebrate National Train Day with live music by Stray Grass and food and drink vendors. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 119 Pitkin Ave — organizers will also show exhibits from the Museum of the West and Grand Valley Model Railroad Club and reveal renderings of the depot’s future design. - ➤ The Colorado Creative Industries Summit will be held at the Grand Junction Convention Center on Thursday and Friday — offering exhibits, workshops, and networking for artists and cultural leaders. - ➤ Thirteen students from Mesa County Valley School District 51 earned honors at the FBLA Colorado State Leadership Conference held April 21st to 23rd in Denver, and six of them will go to the national conference in Anaheim this summer. - ➤ Colorado West Land Trust and the City of Grand Junction will hold a chainbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, May 20th at 4:30 p.m.—featuring food trucks and a group ride to celebrate the finish of the Monument Trail—whose support by a GOCO grant and city funds marks decades of planning to boost outdoor access and conservation. - ➤ Big game herds rebounded in far-northwest Colorado after a harsh winter two years ago and Colorado Parks and Wildlife now proposes offering 261,400 limited licenses statewide for deer, elk, pronghorn, moose and black bear — a 4% increase over some existing numbers but with cuts in pronghorn and bear permits. Agency staff will present the proposal to the commission next week as they adjust license figures based on recovery data and efforts to manage animal populations. Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

- ➤ Former BLM directors debated the relocation of the bureau’s headquarters to Grand Junction after Congressman Jeff Hurd introduced the LOCAL Act in February. William Peery Pendly argued the area is ideal because most BLM land is out west while Mary Jo Rugwell said the move would reduce access to decision-makers — the bill was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. - ➤ Captain Matt Ozanic of Fruita’s Troop 4A received the statewide Supervisor of the Year Award — his team-building and problem-solving skills earned peer recognition from Sergeant Sanchez. He also organized surge operations and led the procession honoring two transportation workers who died in September — actions that reflect the Patrol’s core values. KJCT
- ➤ Mesa County Elections announced winners for the 'I Voted' sticker contest used in the upcoming election season, selecting four students including fifth graders from Messiah Lutheran and Thunder Mountain Elementary, an eighth grader from Redlands Middle, and a seventh grader from Independence Academy. The winners were chosen from 96 entries and were honored during the county commissioners meeting on Tuesday morning — Mesa County Clerk Bobbie Gross said the contest highlights local youth civic engagement.
