COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grand Junction gears up for Bike Month 2025 with several events planned for May — including Bicycle and Pedestrian Counts on May 3rd, 6th, and 8th, a Bike to Work Day on May 16th at City Hall, and a Monument Trail Ribbon Cutting on May 20th at Lunch Loops Trail Head. Parks & Recreation will host an Intro to Mountain Biking class on May 4th for kids ages 9 to 12.  KKCO 11
  • Gear Junction is getting ready for the Grand Valley River Fest on May 17 in partnership with several nonprofits + Save-A-Life Jacket Program, RiversEdge West, River Rescue Dynamics and Grand Junction Adventures. SUP yoga will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Las Colonias Butterfly Pond, and live music, food trucks, a cornhole tournament plus a beer garden will follow.  KJCT

CRIME NEWS

  • Seven individuals were arrested in Garfield County after a years-long investigation linked them to drug trafficking near a middle school in Glenwood Springs — officials seized over 200 fentanyl pills, three pounds of cocaine, four pounds of methamphetamine and one firearm in a search — and the group, led by 44-year-old Sindy Liliana Vasquez Martinez and 24-year-old Osbaldo Ramirez-Andrade, operated between Frisco and Rifle, facing multiple charges.  KKCO 11
  • Authorities arrested seven people in a coordinated operation to stop a drug trafficking ring accused of selling meth, fentanyl and other drugs along the Interstate 70 corridor; an investigation—which lasted 16 months and involved SPEAR, the DEA and other agencies—resulted in charges including drug conspiracy and firearm possession.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Mesa County law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office worked together to lower property crime and reduce felony filings even as violent crime trends varied in recent years. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University awarded $10.7 million in scholarships on May 1 to about 380 local graduates from five District 51 schools — Fruita Monument High received over $4 million, Grand Junction High got roughly $3 million, Palisade High received around $2.3 million, Central High got nearly $950 thousand, and Caprock Academy received over $400 thousand.  KKCO 11
  • Mesa County Valley School District 51 recognized 188 students who maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher over all four years of high school at a ceremony held last week at the Grand Junction Convention Center—schools represented included Central, Fruita Monument, Grand Junction, Palisade, Grand River Academy and Mesa Valley Community School.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Central High School held its second annual military signing day on Wednesday to honor nine students enlisting in the armed forces + four signed with the Army, three with the Marines, one with the Air Force and one with the National Guard; families and peers gathered to show their support.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers are reviewing Senate bill 25-276 called Protect Civil Rights Immigration Status, which would stop ICE from entering private areas of detention centers to keep protections in place for undocumented individuals. Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell warned the rule could force federal agents to operate outside secure zones—raising safety concerns for local law enforcement and neighborhoods.  KJCT
