  • Gemini Beer Company and Rockslide Brew Pub won the Peoples Choice Award for Best Beer at Southwest Arbor Fest—co-owner Todd Williamson said their Sacrolicious Pastry Stout was the festival favorite—and the team is set to attend next year's event.  KKCO 11

  • Grand Junction residents celebrated Star Wars Day on May the Fourth at Avalon Theatre, where fans in costumes watched the original trilogy + proceeds supported future improvements + plans for a costume contest.  KKCO 11
  • The Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra completed its 46th season on May 3-4 and set a new record by selling over 2,000 tickets for its largest indoor concert ever. The concert featured Beethoven’s 9th symphony—marking strong community support as the group launches its new season, Soundscapes.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed on May 2 that rusty crawfish have invaded the West Fork Little Thompson River—marking the first detection in the CPW Northeast Region and raising concerns for native species that rely on aquatic vegetation for cover and food.  KJCT
  • Researchers in Montana built a new way to make building materials from fungi and bacteria—this living, self-repairing mix might one day replace cement in homes called mushroom houses. The study in Cell Reports Physical Science Journal said more work is needed—making such projects a possibility only in the future.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senate Bill 53 cleared the legislature by a vote of 40–24 in the House and 24–11 in the Senate and now heads to Governor Jared Polis for review. The bill—sponsored by Sen. Jessie Danielson, Rep. Elizabeth Velasco, and Rep. Junie Joseph—would end the legal killing of wild bison that stray into Colorado and impose severe penalties for violations.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Two Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies were recognized for their commitment and effort in serving the community. Deputy Nikolette Nequette received a commendation for performing CPR on an elderly man on April 6—and Deputy Daniel Kell earned the Certified Jail Officer designation after rigorous certification requirements led to his national recognition.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
