CRIME NEWS

  • 33-year-old Dusty Moore was arrested on May 5 by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office after deputies responded on April 19 to a sex assault report at the 3000 block of Sandpiper Drive — he now faces charges of human trafficking of a minor and multiple felony sexual assault on a child while being held on a $500,000 bond at Mesa County Detention Facility.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Palisade High School students released endangered razorback sucker fish into the Colorado River at Riverbend Park as part of a five-year program led by science teacher Patrick Steele—this effort has introduced over 1,250 fish to show students the role each creature plays in cleaning the river.  KKCO 11
  • Between April 25 and 28, 181 local nature lovers joined Western Slope’s first City Nature Challenge and made 2,821 observations of 776 species as the claret cup cactus led the photo counts. Participants also captured rare species like Dawson’s hookless cactus+ found only between Grand Junction and De Beque that is federally listed as threatened.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • On May 6, Mesa County Commissioners approved a $300,190 order for about 102,000 gallons of Liquid Bituminous Asphalt to be used on chip seal projects that will extend road life by around seven years — the Road and Bridge supervisor detailed how the material will be applied to repair local roads.  Mesa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association Rocky Mountain Region reported that about 91,000 Coloradans have Alzheimer’s — two-thirds are women — and said Mother’s Day may be tough for families managing the disease. It recommends keeping daily routines, offering meaningful gifts like photo albums or music, and giving caregivers more time to help.  KKCO 11

  • Grand Junction High School baseball team beat Fruita Monument 5-4 in eight innings at Canyon View, ending a nearly four-year winless streak against the Wildcats.
