COMMUNITY NEWS

  • National Police Week is observed this week to honor local law enforcement officers including Deputy Innes, Sgt. Rosette, Acting Fruita Police Chief Dalley, Deputy Geer, and Sgt. Weyler — all of whom gave their lives for the community.  KKCO 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Colorado Department of Transportation is launching a cannabis education campaign to warn teen drivers against mixing marijuana with driving — posters and videos are being sent to 55 driving schools and 17 driver license offices statewide.  KKCO 11
  • Terrence Liu, a Grand Junction High School graduate, was awarded the Gates Scholarship and will study cellular biology at Cal Berkeley. He said his award boosts his dream to work with stem cells and credits Colorado Mesa University’s TRIO Upward Bound (a college prep program) for guiding his success.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Colorado Mesa University has launched its Building Maverick Champions campaign to upgrade athletic facilities; the $11.5 million football complex at Stocker Stadium will begin construction in June to improve game day experiences and support local high school events and NCAA teams.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Colorado Department of Transportation is working with driving schools and license offices to teach drivers ages 15-20 about the risks of cannabis-impaired driving this summer - posters and videos have been sent out to warn that mixing cannabis with driving can lead to DUIs.  KJCT
  • Starting May 19, construction near Broadway Elementary School will add ADA-compliant sidewalks and improve drainage and roadway resurfacing along 22 1/2 Road and Greenbelt Drive, causing temporary traffic impacts and continuing through late September (Mesa County, Mountain Valley Contracting Inc., the city and School District 51 are involved).  Mesa County
  • Federal officials released $47 million for four Colorado water projects aimed at easing the prolonged drought (including grants for the Southwestern Water Conservation District and wetland restoration), while funding recipients work to finalize contracts.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
