ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Three people lost their home after a house fire on the 1300 block of Cedar Avenue in Grand Junction shortly after midnight; firefighters rescued all occupants and recovered one dog and one cat while investigating the cause. KJCT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On May 13, police responded to a fraud report at Alpine Bank and later found 46-year-old Martin Suarez-Estrada, who had outstanding warrants, barricaded at Woodspring Suites, fired one round during a multi-hour SWAT confrontation, and surrendered before being booked on charges including assault in the first degree and resisting arrest. - ➤ Grand Junction police responded today at 8:35 a.m. to a road rage incident near 29 Road and Patterson Road (witnesses said a truck driver repeatedly tried to hit a motorcyclist who was legally lane filtering at a red light and who got minor injuries) and both were arrested and later released on summons (the truck driver for reckless endangerment and the motorcyclist for lacking a motorcycle endorsement and proof of insurance). - ➤ Today the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled that James Genrich, a Grand Junction man convicted in 1993 for pipe bomb explosions between 1989 and 1991 that killed two people, will receive a new trial—attorneys with the Innocence Project said his conviction relied on discredited tool mark evidence. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Local producers say it is a good year for fruit production after orchards and vineyards in Grand Junction escaped serious frost damage this winter - they expect an 85% peach crop, 80% apple crop and a full grape crop, with harvests starting in early July and continuing until late September. Workers are busy thinning and pruning trees throughout the busy spring season. KKCO 11

- ➤ Mesa County Public Health has extended its No Burn Advisory until further notice—officials say the measure will help keep air quality acceptable and stop extra pollution from all burning, including agriculture. WesternSlopeNow.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 14th, CDOT and MADD recognized ten law enforcement champions on the Western Slope, including three from CSP Troop 4A in Fruita and an officer from the Palisade Police Department for their work in impaired driving enforcement. CDOT said the awards honor supporters of traffic safety — a measure to help keep our roads safe — and highlight the vital role law enforcement plays in protecting our communities. KKCO 11
- ➤ Jason Nguyen, a Grand Junction city council member for District B, posted a controversial Facebook comment advising residents not to spend money at businesses that opposed the 4th and 5th street pilot project—local community members criticized his remark and he later said he regretted it. KJCT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The FDA warns that tianeptine (gas station heroin) sold in gas stations, vape shops and online is not approved for any medical use and is marketed as a nootropic supplement to reduce stress and improve brain function. Health experts report that high doses can cause opioid-like effects, including psychosis and withdrawal that may require ICU care. KJCT
- ➤ HopeWest will launch a free dementia support program for individuals diagnosed with dementia who are enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. The program offers resources for people who do not qualify for other support services such as hospice or PACE — Clinical Support Manager Jaycee Ray explained. KJCT
