BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local river rafting companies face rising costs from changing tariffs on imported parts, as cam buckles now cost about $1.16 instead of less than a dollar. Operators from Stiches 'N Stuff and Alpacka Raft say extra paperwork for international shipments (and uncertainty about future orders) makes it hard to adjust prices mid-season.  Colorado Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 17, Colorado Mesa University held its spring commencement where 1,478 graduates received a total of 1,668 degrees—ranging from certificates to master’s degrees. Former Arizona Cardinals tight ends coach Ben Steele spoke to the crowd and emphasized how the graduates will support our local workforce.  KKCO 11
  • Yesterday, Colorado Mesa University celebrated 1478 new graduates — awarding 1668 degrees including 489 certificates, 191 associate, 901 baccalaureate, 4 graduate certificates and 83 masters degrees. Ben Steele, a CMU graduate and Arizona Cardinals coach, spoke about bright futures as many graduates are expected to stay in Grand Junction to support the local workforce while CMU continues its active alumni association.  KJCT
  • Jenny Nipper was selected as the new Assistant Superintendent for Garfield Re-2 School District for the 2025-26 school year after a panel of parents, teachers and administrators interviewed candidates and held a community meet and greet. She will begin transitioning into the role at the end of the school year pending board approval on May 28.  KKCO 11
  • Jenny Nipper was selected as the new Assistant Superintendent for Garfield Re-2 School District for the 2025-26 school year, with her appointment pending board approval at the May 28 meeting. She will begin transitioning from her role as Principal at Rifle Middle School, having started in the district as a substitute teacher + gained experience as a math and science teacher and assistant principal.  KJCT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mason Znamenacek won the state title in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday at JeffCo Stadium—he finished in 13.93 seconds, beating Longmont’s Teagan Malcom by 0.15 seconds and will now compete for Colorado School of Mines. Track coach Dustin Giesenhagen said Znamenacek improved his technique a lot since his first practice as a freshman and has grown into a skilled hurdler.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
