CRIME NEWS

  • A man named Miguel Borja is accused of trying to kill five peace officers during a family disturbance Saturday evening; he allegedly tried to set someone on fire, barricaded himself in a home and set off an explosion that sent five first responders to local hospitals — authorities including the ATF, Colorado Springs police and Metro Crime Lab are now investigating the incident.  KJCT

  • Local businesses are preparing for the JUCO World Series that begins Saturday, May 24th, as officials note the last tournament brought $3.5 million in direct spending and companies are boosting staffing and orders ahead of a busy holiday week — community effort is strong.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction Recycling Drop Off will be closed on May 21 and 22 for planned maintenance — normal hours will resume on May 23.  City of Grand Junction
  • Grand Junction homeowners are reminded by Mesa County to apply for property tax exemptions if they qualify. Seniors aged 65 and older who have lived in their homes for at least 10 years may save about $500 on their tax by receiving a 50 percent reduction on the first $200K if they apply by July 15—while eligible veterans and gold star spouses must apply by July 1 by bringing a completed form to the assessor’s office.  KJCT

  • Mesa County Public Health in Grand Junction is alerting consumers that Nature Mills is recalling rice mixes, soups, and spices—products may contain undeclared allergens like wheat, milk, and sesame which can cause serious allergic reactions.   • Monument Health in the Grand Valley is using a network that links local doctors and hospitals to slow rising healthcare costs by sharing savings when care improves.
