EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado Mesa University has surpassed a $10 million goal for its Century Scholarship fund — a milestone achieved during its centennial celebration — supporting students to afford college. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises visitors to prepare gear, have water and food, and wear life jackets as busy Memorial Day weekend draws hikers and boaters to lakes, rivers, and state parks. Officials warn to clean equipment to prevent zebra mussels and to stay alert to changing weather.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials removed Westlake Park Playground after safety inspections showed the aging equipment was unsafe for children. A replacement is proposed for the 2027 budget (pending funding approval).  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • The Colorado Department of Transportation expects heavier traffic this Memorial Day weekend as the JUCO World Series brings extra vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to Grand Junction. Construction projects will be suspended from Friday, May 22 at 12:00 p.m. until Tuesday, May 26 to boost safety.  KJCT
  • The Mesa County Department of Human Services (MCDHS) held a Memorial Day flag planting ceremony outside the Workforce Center this morning to honor fallen military members. Flag placement is Friday at 3 p.m., a retreat Saturday at 6 p.m., and services Monday at 10 a.m. at Western Colorado Veterans Cemetery.  Mesa County
  • Grand Junction police and city leaders address a rise in unsafe riding as more riders, including inexperienced middle schoolers, take class three e-bikes and electric motorcycles onto roads and sidewalks. They urge parents to review local laws (class restrictions limit usage to roads and designated areas) to keep riders safe.  KKCO 11

  • Mesa County Public Health appointed Erin Minnerath as its new executive director earlier this month (she previously served as deputy director) and she now aims to balance operations and budget challenges while bolstering community preparedness in Mesa County.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • Fruita native Hunter Smolinski will play in the JUCO World Series on May 23 at Suplizio Field with the Blinn Buccaneers + he grew up watching the tournament and now returns home to face defending champions Salt Lake Briuns in game three.  KJCT
  • Officials said today that the local Sports Commission (not the city council) will lead talks for an air race planned for spring 2027.
