CRIME NEWS

  • The Colorado State Patrol is partnering with Grand Junction Police Department for a surge operation today on North Avenue and Patterson Road amid two serious injury and five minor injury DUI crashes in Mesa County this year—Patrol Captain Matt Ozanic warned drivers to plan ahead and avoid drinking while driving this busy Memorial Day weekend.  KJCT
  • Garfield County officials reported that two separate road rage incidents involved persons pointing guns at vehicles — one suspect used a BB gun and received a four-month jail sentence, underscoring that point guns during traffic disputes is considered felony menacing.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Chinle Cactus and Succulent Society is a local club of 90 members who work to preserve endangered cacti and teach residents about water conservation in Grand Junction. They meet monthly at a demonstration garden next to the Colorado State University Extension office — a setting where workshops and cactus walks honor the legacy of their late founder.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 21, nearly 50 residents spoke at the Grand Junction City Council meeting about reverting the 4th and 5th Street corridor to its pre-pilot condition. Residents voiced mixed opinions—citing safety concerns and business impacts—about the change in downtown traffic.  KKCO 11
  • During Wednesday’s meeting, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning Council Member Jason Nguyen’s boycott comment after he apologized for his remarks—council members expressed support for his apology and planned to revisit the Fourth and Fifth Street project in the next workshop. The city also announced that after reducing operations at the downtown Resource Center on May 15, services will drop to one day a week from June 15 while short-term funding is provided to nonprofit partners until more permanent plans are developed.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Mesa County leaders and department directors began updating the county’s strategic plan to guide budget and services. They will work together to build a shared vision that strengthens how all departments serve residents — more updates are expected as the project moves forward —.  Mesa County
  • Today, Mesa County employees gathered in front of the Department of Human Services and Workforce Center to plant American flags and honor fallen service members led by Veterans Service Officers Anthony Lee (and) Laura Stanley.   • On May 21, Mesa County first responders and Family Health West hosted the annual Phoenix Award ceremony to honor over 100 first responders who helped save 21 lives by treating cardiac arrest patients who survived with no neurological damage—showcasing the teamwork of the Fruita Police and Fire Department.  KKCO 11
