ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting June 2, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests will close Little Bear Campground and the Island Lake day-use area for reconstruction and improvements until summer 2026. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CDOT and AAA warn Colorado drivers to plan for delays and check vehicle safety since lower gas prices will likely increase traffic for Memorial Day weekend. They advise travelers to fill up and prepare for more sobriety checkpoints—key steps for a safer road trip.  KJCT
  • Governor Jared Polis signed two bills on Thursday that make wild bison protected as big game wildlife so that hunting them without a license is now illegal (after several were shot when they wandered in from Utah). The second bill expands the wild horse management program by giving new duties to the Department of Agriculture and forming a committee to study future solutions.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Congressman Jeff Hurd has backed the Senate's proposal to permanently protect over 730,000 acres in areas including the Gunnison Basin and North Fork Valley by introducing a companion House bill—this measure limits oil and gas development and has strong local support. He is still reviewing a separate proposal for the Dolores River corridor and has introduced legislation to reverse recent BLM restrictions in the region.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health announced a recall of cucumbers from Bedner Growers that may have been contaminated with Salmonella — the produce was distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales from April 29 to May 19 and has been linked to 26 illnesses in multiple states, including Colorado.
