  • Tanya Valencia, known as Big T, is a Grand Junction resident who devotes dozens of hours each week feeding up to 150 unsheltered people every Monday and Thursday. The former addict now five years sober uses community donations to prepare meals at a resource center or from her car—her work is widely praised as a turning point in helping local neighbors in need.  KKCO 11

  • On Memorial Day, hundreds gathered at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado to honor fallen soldiers—Mesa County Commissioner Cody Davis, Representative Matt Soper, and other speakers led the ceremony with wreath presentations, gun salutes, and an F-16C fighter flyover.   • Cartman, a three-year-old Pitbull mix who loves people and other dogs, is available for adoption at the Grand Rivers Humane Society and will attend a Chow Down Redlands Dog Adoption Event (Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).   • An elderly hiker died after falling off a ledge near Little Dolores Falls in Glade Park Monday as bystanders attempted CPR—Mesa County Search and Rescue retrieved her body—and just after midnight, Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Bunting Avenue that displaced four adults with no injuries reported.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last summer, the city mailed 5,400 community satisfaction surveys to residents and stakeholders and received 851 responses from residents and 297 from stakeholders—yielding a 21% response rate. Fifty-eight percent of responders said the city is headed in the right direction—down 2% from last year—while 27% felt it was heading wrong, with public safety and sustainable resource management remaining top priorities.  WesternSlopeNow.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials have warned about a serious measles outbreak with 1,024 confirmed cases in 31 states since May 16th—Mesa County Public Health held a vaccine clinic in April and urges everyone to get fully vaccinated to reduce the spread and protect vulnerable groups. Experts say that early vaccination can lessen the severity of the illness, especially for young children and those with weakened immune systems.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • On Memorial Day, day three of the JUCO World Series paused at Suplizio field in Grand Junction to honor veterans with a helicopter landing (bringing a Vietnam veteran), a flag walk, and a dove release. Local music groups then performed patriotic songs before fireworks ended the event.  KJCT
