COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An energetic 11‑week‑old pit mix puppy named Cosmo is ready for adoption at Mesa County Animal Services, located at 971A Coffman Road in Whitewater (next to the landfill). Cosmo was brought in as a stray, has been neutered, and is best suited to a home with another dog.  KKCO 11
  • The Veterans Memorial Cemetery Foundation announced that artificial wreaths will replace live ones at local veterans’ graves this Christmas season to reduce expenses (wreaths must now be purchased only for those with a loved one interred).  KKCO 11
  • Local organizers have launched the Grand Valley Yoga Fest to raise funds for mental health and suicide prevention, offering yoga & mindfulness sessions and support resources for the community this weekend. All proceeds will benefit local mental health programs in the Grand Valley.  KJCT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A child playing near Eagle Rim Park slipped off a cliff edge above the Colorado River and was rescued by a 911 caller and a passerby (the police and fire department checked for injuries) before the child was returned to their parents.  KKCO 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fruita’s annual Mike the Headless Chicken Festival kicked off Friday with a beer garden and comedy show — it continues today with a pancake breakfast, car show, 5K run, chicken show and peep and wing eating contest free to attend.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Grand Junction parks will reduce irrigation usage amid historic drought conditions; crews are cutting back on turf for low-demand areas while keeping sports fields, mature trees, and local golf courses maintained with water-saving technology—residents are urged to try the city’s high-water lawn conversion program.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials say parents must assess young people's readiness to stay home alone during summer break to prevent safety risks. Joe Kellerby of the child welfare department said that maturity—not age alone—is key and recommended training courses and practical discussions to build essential safety skills.  KJCT
  • Today is National Heat Awareness Day in Grand Junction, and local meteorologist Stephen Bowers advised residents to drink plenty of water and seek cool shelters to prevent heat illness. He warned that cars can quickly reach dangerous temperatures (over 130°F) and endanger people and pets.  KKCO 11
