- ➤ On May 16, Colorado Mesa University held an official groundbreaking for Formation Food Hall to create a new dining option for both students and residents—CMU President John Marshall, city leaders, and representatives from Haselden Construction attended the ceremony. - ➤ A Grand Junction man, 31-year-old Ashanti Schmitt, was charged Thursday with first-degree attempted arson after he allegedly set a vehicle on fire at 11:10 p.m. Feb. 26 in a local parking lot and faces additional charges including second-degree arson and criminal mischief—he is set to appear in court on June 4. - ➤ Officers arrested 31-year-old Ashanti Schmitt on May 29 in connection with a February vehicle fire in the 2800 block of Orchard Avenue that caused no injuries—he faces charges of attempted 1st Degree Arson, 2nd Degree Arson, Criminal Mischief, Possession of Incendiary Parts, and Domestic Violence—and he is held at Mesa County Detention Facility. - ➤ The city is closing sections of Crosby Ave from Main St to W. Gunnison for utility work through June + it is building a roundabout at Horizon Dr and G Rd through October to guide drivers with detour signs. Non-city projects will add delays with lane shifts on 29 Rd between North Ave and Patterson Rd + 6th St closed today for a water tie-in and one-lane restrictions on First, Ute, and Pitkin. - ➤ Governor Polis signed a bill Friday at Community Hospital in Grand Junction that prohibits restrictions on 340B drug providers to help low-income patients get affordable medications. The Colorado Senate passed the bill 30-4 and the House 57-8 (which will save Community Hospital up to $3 million a year) as the law aims to lower drug costs and protect the federal pricing program. - ➤ At a special meeting Thursday night, the City Council voted unanimously to split the Fourth and Fifth Street pilot project at Grand Avenue—keeping one lane with a buffered bike lane north while adding two lanes with a bike lane downtown—after receiving input from residents. City Engineering Director Trent Prall said changes north of Grand will occur in the next few weeks and modifications south will likely finish by the end of summer. WesternSlopeNow.com
