COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local and state agencies launch a Summer Safety campaign in June—starting with a focus on cycle safety—to share tips that help riders stay safe as summer begins.  City of Grand Junction

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple moped crashes happened on North Avenue on May 31 and June 1, one of them causing a death, and Colorado State Patrol Trooper Sherri Mendez warned riders to wear helmets and eye protection while urging drivers to be alert as summer traffic will soon increase — riders should plan safe routes to avoid risks.  KJCT

  • This summer, a variety of concerts are scheduled across the valley—big names include Big Head Todd and The Monsters with Cheap Trick on June 5 at Las Colonias Park, Ryan Bingham on June 7, and DJ Snoopadelic on June 11. Additional shows through August feature acts like Jo Dee Messina, Leftover Salmon with The Infamous Stringdusters, The String Cheese Incident, and Darius Rucker at several local venues.  WesternSlopeNow.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County officials have been treating invasive noxious weeds (such as Purple loosestrife and Yellow star thistle) for nearly two decades to protect native plants, livestock and crops from dense monocultures. The county also works with residents to report new infestations and provides guidance on treatment options.  Mesa County
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed the death of male gray wolf (2507) on May 31 in northwest Colorado and said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the cause since the species is federally listed under the Endangered Species Act. CPW continues monitoring four potential dens that may indicate new pup births, with the final determination to be released after the investigation.  KJCT

  • The Colorado Court of Appeals denied an appeal last week from neighbors who tried to overturn the Grand Junction City Council's re-zone decision for a 15-acre parcel in the Redlands. City Council approved the re-zone after holding public meetings and accepting written comments — the court ruled that the city followed proper procedures.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Mesa County Department of Human Services marks June as Adult Protection Awareness Month to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect. The department will host a Purple Ribbon Ceremony on June 5 at 1 p.m. at the Community Services Building (MCDHS) and urges residents to report any suspected abuse.  Mesa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado health officials confirmed measles in two unvaccinated El Paso County residents who were recovering at home. Officials advised anyone at Love’s Travel Stop on 748 22 Road in Grand Junction on Tuesday, May 27 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. to monitor for fever, cough, runny nose or rash—signs of the disease—and call their health provider immediately if symptoms develop.  KKCO 11
  • CDPHE announced a possible measles exposure at a Grand Junction gas station, Love’s Travel Stop/Carls Jr at 748 22 Road, where people who visited between 6-10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, may need to watch for signs such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that starts on the face. The department advised anyone exposed to monitor symptoms for 21 days—symptoms might show as late as June 17 while the MMR vaccine offers strong protection.  WesternSlopeNow.com
