  • Despite heavy weather on Friday, Palisade kicked off its 16th annual Bluegrass and Roots Festival at Riverbend Park with live music and family events. The festival features a magic show, bubbles, balloon animals and face painting while safety measures with EMS, fire and police are in place for a secure weekend.  KJCT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Club Car Wash held its grand opening on Saturday, June 7 at its new site at 691 24 Road in Grand Junction. The event featured live radio remotes, giveaways of free washes, gift cards, coolers and memberships plus a discount on the $25 MVP wash now priced at $1 with proceeds benefiting local nonprofit STRiVE.  WesternSlopeNow.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Junction police responded to a call about a verbal disturbance on Friday at 3:10 p.m. on Helena Court and arrested 51-year-old Richard Valdez after speaking with those involved because he had an outstanding warrant and was charged with criminal mischief, obstruction and domestic violence.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artists are gaining attention this summer in Grand Junction as downtown hosts First Friday Art Walks and KAI Dispensary — a local venue for art — features work by artist Luke Sorrick while owner Joey Coleman — a Grand Junction native — said the event will give local art the exposure it needs.  KJCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County has received twice as much rain this week as it normally sees all of June — overall totals remain below average, and forecasters reported that the Grand Valley had about 1 to 1¼ inches by Friday afternoon with more moisture expected mainly in higher areas.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 7, the Veterans Memorial Cemetery held its first ceremony honoring women veterans—where a bronze statue of Captain Mary Ellen Kuhlman was unveiled and veterans along with Congressman Jeff Hurd gave remarks. Community members gathered to honor the long service of women in the military.  KJCT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Summer is here and school just ended, so local shops like La Michoacana and Enstroms Candies offer cold treats—ice cream, shave ice, and even fried ice cream—to help families beat the heat. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The city is moving ahead with its Salt Flats affordable housing project on a 22-acre lot northeast of 28 Road and Grand Avenue, using a Proposition 123 grant to select developers like Volunteers of America and MGL Partners to create at least 324 units—mostly affordable. A request for proposals to build essential infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks and utilities has been released, and work is expected to start next year.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
