- ➤ Snow is a one-year-old Pitbull mix at Grand Rivers Humane Society who is adoptable now, has frosted-colored paws and a nose, sits, walks on a leash, and is crate-trained well — potential adopters are encouraged to consider homes with children older than 10 and other pets. KKCO 11
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Junction Parks and Recreation kicked off its Junior Lifeguard program on June 16, where children ages 10 to 15 learned lifesaving skills such as swimming, rescue drills and CPR (the program costs 84 dollars). The program has run for over twenty years to boost water safety in our community. KJCT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mesa County Adult Protection Services works to safeguard at-risk adults by investigating abuse, neglect and mistreatment + connecting them with services that promote independence and dignity during Adult Protection Awareness Month. Mesa County
- ➤ On June 5, a deputy pulled over Caroline Dias Goncalves near Loma for driving too close to a semi-truck, and after the stop—where she said she was from Utah but was born in Brazil—the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office removed its members from a multi-agency chat when it learned the channel was used for immigration enforcement; Goncalves was issued a warning and is now held in ICE custody at the Denver Contract Detention Facility. - ➤ On June 5, a Mesa County Sheriff's Office deputy pulled over 19-year-old University of Utah student Caroline Dias Goncalves near Fruita on Interstate 70 and released her with a warning, while immigration officials later arrested her and took her to an Aurora detention center, prompting the sheriff's office to review its multi-agency communication group (set for drug interdiction) as an investigation continues. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Inter Mountain Health Saint Mary’s donated 90 life jackets to the Mesa County Save-a-Life Jacket program, which offers free flotation devices from seven kiosks to help keep river goers safe as warmer weather brings more people to the water. Save-a-Life Jacket executive director Ethan Ball said each jacket’s safety label shows when it needs to be replaced—supporting proper fit for everyone. KKCO 11
- ➤ During National Mosquito Awareness Week, Mesa County Public Health advised Grand Junction residents to use EPA approved insect repellent and wear long sleeves to lower the risk of mosquito bites that spread West Nile virus. The agency also urged residents to drain standing water—measures that will help keep people safe as summer begins. Mesa County
- ➤ As temperatures rise in Mesa County, parked cars quickly heat up and put dogs at risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and organ failure. Residents are urged to keep pets indoors and report any dogs left in vehicles to Mesa County Animal Services (9702424646). Mesa County
