COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Foster children in Mesa County are helped by the Bear Necessities program, which supplies new clothing, shoes, blankets, backpacks, and toys to make them feel welcome. Kids from birth to 18 can choose age‑appropriate items from the Bear Necessities Closet (all items are brand new).  Mesa County
  • Food Bank of the Rockies will move its mobile pantry service to Sherwood Park on Tuesday, July 15 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to help local residents get free food—fresh produce, meat, and baked goods—as volunteers load their cars.  KKCO 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Safeway and Albertsons workers in Grand Junction struck Tuesday over issues of low wages and understaffing as the Patterson Road Safeway closed part of Tuesday before reopening Wednesday. The union said it will continue the strike until its demands are met — company officials said they are negotiating in good faith — as their contract talks proceed.  WesternSlopeNow.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last week, CDOT maintenance crews from Region 3 took part in the annual Truck Roadeo to test their skills with a written exam, vehicle inspection, and obstacle courses — the event helped prepare them for winter weather. High scorers will compete in a state contest in August to show their excellence in safely operating vehicles.  KJCT
  • Governor Jared Polis called for the release of 19-year-old University of Utah student Caroline Dias Goncalves from ICE custody after her arrest in Aurora on June 5—Polis said she was detained based on wrongly shared immigration details and has no criminal record.   • The Senate has proposed a bill that would allow private developers to purchase up to 250 million acres of public lands—14 million of which are in Colorado, including well-used recreation sites near Grand Junction. Local officials warn that cities without deep funds risk losing these outdoor spaces to private developers, which could hurt the local recreation economy.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa County Public Health announced a national recall of FreshRealm and Home Chef ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may have been sold locally after USDA linked them to 17 illnesses, three deaths and one fetal loss. Residents should check freezers or refrigerators and return or discard the items—those with flu-like symptoms after eating the recalled food are advised to seek medical care.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • FreshRealm ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo products are being recalled nationwide because they may contain Listeria, which has been linked to 17 illnesses, three deaths and one fetal loss as of June 17; some items with best-by dates up to June 27 may have reached Mesa County.
