🎓 Education
Grand Valley middle schoolers participated in a free four-day Wellspring Project at Connected Lakes State Park and learned about local rivers and invasive plants while sampling invertebrates and collecting trash for art on Monday (the project’s first day).
Some students look forward to rafting and flyfishing later in the week, and Director (Cara Kukuraitis) said the project helps address the spread of invasive species.
🌲 Environment
The National Weather Service warned that drought, high temperatures and gusty winds will raise wildfire risk on the Western Slope in July.
Meteorologist Brianna Bealo said dry weather, brief showers and gusts may lead to more fires—but monsoon rains might lower the risk later in the month.
🏛️ Government
The Colorado Department of Transportation installed cameras on highway 1-19 after nearly 600 work zone crashes and 31 fatalities occurred in 2024, and enforcement is set to begin in the fall with warnings planned for the end of July.
Officials plan to impose a $75 fine for speeding in work zones—an effort to improve safety.
Adult Protection Services in Mesa County helps vulnerable adults by looking into signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation and linking them with needed legal help.
