COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Foster Alumni Mentors has opened its Inspired Starfish thrift shop at 529 25½ Road to support foster care alumni with affordable furnishings, job skills training, and a 10% discount on purchases. The shop soft-launched on June 18 and will have its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m. on July 18 — community members are invited to donate items and gain valuable work experience.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Cross Orchard Historic Site will host a weekly Saturday farmers market (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) through September 27 that offers fresh produce, local foods, handmade crafts and rides on a historic mini train. The market will also highlight the area’s agricultural legacy with its restored apple orchard.  KJCT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The UFCW 7 Union announced they reached a fully recommended tentative agreement with Safeway that ended the strike affecting over 40 stores on July 5—workers will return to their same positions with fully funded healthcare, pensions, and stronger wage increases beginning Monday, July 7.  KJCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Junction will place sandbags near the boat ramp at River Park on Monday to protect four endangered fish as water levels drop in the Colorado River — the park will stay open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and visitors can use the water and beach areas until levels rise.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Grand Junction officials will place large sandbags at River Park at Las Colonias to guide the Colorado River toward its main channel as water levels have dropped steadily over the past month—protecting four endangered fish species until the flow increases.  KKCO 11
  • The Glade Park Volunteer Fire Department re-formed into the Fire Protection District after funding issues and rising costs led its board to back a service plan approved by the County Commissioners on June 24. The new district will seek voter approval for a property tax levy—estimated to initially bring in about $136,689—while keeping current personnel until staffing needs change.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • Former Grand Junction Rockies coach Bobby Jenks, a World Series champion with the Chicago White Sox, died at 44 after battling stage 4 stomach cancer—he led his team to a 62-33 record and earned the city's second league title in his debut season as manager.  KKCO 11
