COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grand Junction is now home to The Inspired Starfish—a thrift store that supports the Foster Alumni Mentors program which helps foster care alumni with employment, housing, and education. The store had its soft opening on June 18 and will hold its grand opening on July 18 while also offering internships.  KKCO 11
  • Missy is a three-year-old black lab mix available for adoption from the Roice-Hurst Humane Society in Grand Junction—she loves treats, enjoys walks, and performs tricks but does best as the only pet since she does not get along with cats and some dogs.  KJCT

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Junction police arrested William Golden, 30, Monday at around 7:20 p.m. after he allegedly assaulted a person outside Maverik at 2948 Patterson Road — the victim was transported by Grand Junction Fire Department to a hospital with minor injuries.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Authorities reported that 51-year-old Jodel Bitonio from Montrose was hit and killed on U.S. 50 near Star Nelson Road early Sunday and state patrol are now searching for the driver of a yellow 2008 Chevy Cobalt with black racing stripes—two drivers have come forward to assist the investigation.  KJCT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, District 51 launched the 'Stuff the Bus' drive in partnership with the District 51 Foundation, Town Square Media, and Mesa Mall to collect school supplies at Mesa Mall until July 29—these supplies will be packaged and given to local schools in August.  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa County is not affected by a DNA lab scandal that troubled other areas—District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said no local cases were impacted and that the Western Slope lab still delivers quality work even though it sometimes has backlogs.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • Glade Park Volunteer Fire Department’s budget has grown while its funding dropped and it is now the last fire department in Mesa County to form a tax district—voters will soon decide on a property tax change along with measures to replace equipment. The department may also explore using water rights from Fruita for fire emergencies.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • The Grand Junction Police Department said its 911 phone lines are down and is working to restore them as quickly as possible. People needing help should call non-emergency dispatch at (970-242-6707) or text 911.  WesternSlopeNow.com
  • Mesa County Department of Human Services is helping residents get food and medical benefits faster by offering quick phone support—residents are advised to call the Economic Assistance Call Center and other listed numbers for actions like checking benefits or replacing a lost card instead of waiting in person.  Mesa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study from CU Boulder found that nearly half of sampled cannabis flower products contained more THC than the labels stated—raising concerns for medical patients. The research sampled nearly 300 products from dispensaries and showed that concentrate labels were mostly accurate.  WesternSlopeNow.com
