  • Yesterday, July 12, POLLUX boutique on Main Street marked 25 years of fashion and community influence. New owner Sadye Saad said the store grew from a small vision to a local landmark — and she plans to keep inspiring confidence among shoppers.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • On July 12, the Grand Mesa A Cappella Chorus sponsored the second annual A Cappella Junction Harmony Festival at Redlands United Methodist Church, where women from ages 12 to 90 gathered to learn harmony songs and perform as a group — the event was free thanks to a grant from Sweet Adelines International.  KKCO 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Rim Fire in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park covered 2,896 acres yesterday and remained 0% contained, prompting park closures and evacuation orders for the Bostwick Park community with Highway 347 closed at the junction of U.S. Highway 50. A surge operation on U.S. Highways 6 and 50 by state and local officers yielded 63 traffic stops and two DUI arrests.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • RiversEdge West received a $20,000 grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation to support its Grand Valley Stewardship Program, which will improve river habitat and expand environmental education. The funds will back projects like riparian restoration and more than 10 public workdays (over 350 volunteer service hours planned) to involve the local community.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Grand Junction Fire Department helped the Bureau of Land Management fight the Turner Gulch Fire near Gateway. Crews protected nearby structures as the fire – which started on July 10 and burned 139 acres – became contained.  KJCT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture updated the WIC income criteria, raising limits by $1,092 to $1,758 for families of varying sizes and making the new guidelines already effective. Mesa County Behavioral Health Administration will host a resource fair — at the Mesa County Public Library Central Branch Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. — while the annual 'Stuff the Bus' school supply drive accepts new supplies through July 29.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
