CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mesa County law enforcement arrested five people during a three-day operation to stop online child exploitation — the suspects include Grand Junction residents Randy Abeyta, aged 61, Bobby Adams, aged 23, and Everett Kiser, aged 41, along with Delta’s Robert Turner, aged 55, and Montrose’s Fidel Nunez-Morales, aged 37, all charged with crimes involving child luring as agencies warned these actions will not be tolerated. - ➤ The South Rim Fire in Montrose County grew by 100 acres Monday morning to 3,633 acres after lightning ignited the blaze that forced evacuations at Black Canyon of the Gunnison and nearby neighborhoods last week. Fire management transferred Monday from the San Juan Type 3 Team 8 to the Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team 3—over 300 personnel using engines, dozers and aircraft are working to protect structures and power lines while two water scooper aircraft are set to arrive later. - ➤ The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office announced Highway 141 was closed at 2:00 p.m. Monday due to fire activity near Gateway from two wildfires (Turner Gulch Fire covered 1,470 acres and Wright Draw Fire covered 249 acres). Officials asked residents to avoid the road unless leaving evacuation zones and said an evacuation center is open at Clifton Community Campus (3270 D 1/2 Road). WesternSlopeNow.com
- ➤ The City of Grand Junction is forming a Housing Affordable Code Task Force to review policies and speed up home approvals. Council members plus Mayor Cody Kennedy and others will choose 10 to 15 members on July 16 to help lower home prices. KKCO 11
