CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Junction Police warned residents about a text scam that pretends to be from UPS and urges them to confirm delivery details or pay fees—official advice is to ignore texts coming from unknown numbers.  KJCT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Craig Childs—renowned author and naturalist—will share his journey down the Colorado River through photography and storytelling at Our Lady of Perpetual Motion in Fruita on July 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. All funds will benefit the Confluence Center as it builds a new facility near Dos Rios in Grand Junction.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host the 15th Annual Grand Mesa Moose Day at the U.S. Forest Service Visitor Center on July 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—experts will share how biologists transplant and track moose at the free event.  KKCO 11
  • A fire on the South Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison started on July 10 from a lightning strike and has burned 4,227 acres while 457 responders used aircraft, engines and heavy equipment to fight it amid steep terrain. Park officials said about 80% of the park’s most popular South Rim is burned and it will reopen in stages when the fire is contained (at a cost of $6.2 million shared by the Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Montrose County).  KKCO 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting July 21, traffic in Grand Junction will be affected by several road projects; the city will do roundabout work at Horizon Dr. & G Rd. and manage water project detours on Ouray Ave while CDOT and Chipeta Heights will restrict lanes and close part of B ½ Rd. Motorists should follow detour signs and traffic control directions to avoid delays.  City of Grand Junction
  • Mesa County's voluntary resignation program, announced on June 24 to cut costs and help prevent layoffs, has seen about 15 county employees express interest—with roughly half of those resignations denied to protect essential roles. Employees who are eligible can receive severance and benefit coverage by volunteering before Aug. 1, and County Administrator Todd Hollenbeck said the program aids planning for the 2026 budget.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
  • The City of Grand Junction will authorize the Grand Junction Housing Authority on or about 3 August to request HUD funds for a project that plans to build a four level housing development with 54 units at 674 Durham Drive. The project is estimated to cost $4 million and received a $1.4 million grant for Phase 1 while the environmental review recorded no significant impact (written comments on the review are accepted until 2 August).  City of Grand Junction
  • Grand Junction City Council will review cost estimates for changing Fourth and Fifth streets during an upcoming workshop. City Manager Mike Bennett said the workshop will provide more details on converting the streets south of Grand Avenue into two lanes with a bike lane—information that includes the impact on parking and the planned timing.  Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

  • On July 16, a bilingual health fair — held at Palisade Gymnasium — brought together over 30 organizations to offer services such as skin cancer screenings, acupuncture, and CPR lessons for Spanish speakers in the Grand Valley.
